    Source / Purification

Monoclonal antibody is produced by immunizing animals with a synthetic peptide corresponding to residues near the amino terminus of human Giantin/GOLGB1 protein.

    Background

The Golgi apparatus functions in modifying, organizing, and transporting proteins and membranes targeted to other parts of the cell, such as the plasma membrane, lysosomes, and endosomes. This regulated transport is important for appropriate protein localization, secretion, and signal transduction. Members of the Golgin family of proteins, including GM130, Giantin, p115, and GRASP65, are defined by their presence in the Golgi matrix and by their long coiled-coil domains. Golgin function, regulated in part by small GTPases of the Rab and Arl families, includes establishing and maintaining Golgi structure and transport (reviewed in 1). The largest member of the Golgin family is Giantin, also known as GOLGB1. Giantin functions by restricting the fusion of nearby Golgi stacks. This controlled separation prevents transport errors and ensures that proteins and lipids remain in the Golgi long enough to undergo proper glycosylation (2).
