Can the Malachite Green Phosphate Detection Kit #12776 be used to measure free phosphate in cell lysates?

We originally developed the Malachite Green Phosphate Detection Kit #12776 to detect free phosphates released during enzymatic reactions (i.e., kinase activity). One could potentially use the kit to measure free phosphate in cell lysates provided that the base for the lysis buffer is not a PBS buffer. Any buffer used in this assay cannot contain phosphates or it will alter the standard curve and the readout could be too high for detection.
