    Monoclonal antibody is produced by immunizing animals with a synthetic HIV-1 Tat-tag peptide.

    Background

    Epitope tags are useful for the labeling and detection of proteins using immunoblotting, immunoprecipitation, and immunostaining techniques. Because of their small size, they are unlikely to affect the tagged protein’s biochemical properties.

    A small peptide derived from the HIV-1 Tat protein has been used to internalize various types of molecules, from small particles to proteins, peptides and nucleic acids, into the cells. The 'transduction domain' or region conveying the cell penetrating properties of HIV Tat-derived peptide appears to be confined to a small (9 amino acid) stretch of basic amino acids, with the sequence RKKRRQRRR. The way this peptide enters cells is still under investigation (1).
